Hadith 950 - Bab 163 (Praising the Deceased)
Chapter 7 (The Book of Visiting the Sick)

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Some Companions happened to pass by a funeral procession (bier) and they praised him (the deceased). The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, "He will certainly enter it." Then they passed by another funeral procession and they spoke ill of the deceased. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, "He will certainly enter it." `Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) said: "(O Messenger of Allah,) what do you mean by `He will certainly enter it?'' He (Peace be upon him) replied, "You praised the first person, so he will enter Jannah; and you spoke ill of the second person, so he will enter Hell. You are Allah's witnesses on earth."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Anas (das) rapporte: «On passa avec un cercueil et les gens dirent du bien du défunt. Le Prophète (bsdl) dit: «II lui revient de droit». Puis on passa avec un autre cercueil et les gens dirent du mal du défunt. Le Prophète (bsdl) dit alors: «II lui revient de droit». "Omar Ibn Al Khattàb (das) lui demanda: «Qu"est-ce qui lui revient de droit?» Il dit: «Celui-là, vous avez dit du bien de lui et le Paradis lui est revenu de droit et l"autre, vous avez dit du mal de lui et l"Enfer lui est revenu de droit. Vous êtes en effet les témoins de Dieu sur terre».

Abul-Aswad (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I came to Al- Madinah, and while I was sitting beside 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, a funeral procession passed by. The people praised the deceased, and 'Umar bin Al-Khattab said: "He will certainly enter it." Then another funeral procession passed by and the people praised the deceased. 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) said: "He will certainly enter it." A third funeral procession passed by and the people spoke ill of the deceased. He said: "He will certainly enter it." I (Abul-Aswad) asked: "O Amir Al-Mu'minin (i.e., Leader of the Believers)! What do you mean by 'He will certainly enter it'?" He replied: "I said the same as was said by the Prophet (Peace be upon him). He (Peace be upon him) said, 'If four persons testify the righteousness of a Muslim, Allah will grant him Jannah.' We asked: 'If three persons testify his righteousness?' He (Peace be upon him) replied, 'Even three'. Then we asked: 'If two?' He (Peace be upon him) replied, 'Even two.' We did not ask him (regarding the testimony) of one."

Abou Al Aswad a dit: «Je me rendis une fois à Médine et m"assis près de "Omar Ibn Al Khattàb (das). A ce moment passa un cortège funèbre. On dit du bien du défunt et "Omar dit: «II lui revient de droit». Puis passa un autre cortège funèbre et l"on dit du bien du défunt. "Omar dit: «II lui revient de droit». Puis passa un troisième cortège funèbre et l"on dit du mal du défunt. "Omar dit: II lui revient de droit». Abou Al Aswad rapporte: «Je dis: «Qu"est-ce qui lui revient de droit? 0 Prince des Croyants!» Il dit: «J"ai dit comme a dit le Prophète (bsdl): «Tout Musulman dont quatre Musulmans témoignent de son bien. Dieu l"introduit au Paradis». Nous dîmes: «Et s"ils ne sont que trois?» Il dit: «Même s"ils ne sont que trois». Nous dîmes: «Et s"ils ne sont que deux?» Il dit: «Même s"ils ne sont que deux». Nous n"osâmes pas lui dire: «Et si ce n"est qu"un seul témoin?». (Rapporté par Al Boukhâri)
